Effnetplattformen AB (publ): Effnet AB launches Effnet Backhaul Header Compression(TM) for backhaul over satellite, microwave and relay networks
Effnet AB, the leading provider of header compression software for wireless and fixed networks, today announced the launch of a new product, Effnet Backhaul Header CompressionTM (Effnet BHCTM).
A backhaul link is an intermediate network connection that connects the core network with the edge network. This network connection could be of many types, including a typical home or enterprise broadband connection used for small cells, a microwave link to connect to a city wide small cell network, a satellite link used to connect remote base station sites or, with the 3GPP concept of LTE relay base stations, a relay link between the donor cell and the LTE relay.
The backhaul and relay links are network tunnels. IP packets on these links carry multiple layers of network protocol stacks on top of each other, often with a specific tunneling protocol such as GTP-U in between. The existing header compression schemes are able to compress IP packets carrying a single protocol stack layer. The currently most advanced header compression scheme, ROHC, can only compress raw IP tunnels and lacks the capability to compress multiple layers of protocol stacks such as UDP and TCP tunnels and some of the tunneling headers like GTP-U commonly used in cellular networks.
Effnet BHCTM is the most suitable header compression scheme for backhaul networks.
It is capable of compressing multiple layers of protocol stacks in IP packets.
It is highly compression efficient and at the same time requires significantly less CPU cycles to process each IP packet compared with e.g. ROHC.
It supports compression of Ethernet, IPv6, IPv4, UDP, RTP, TCP, ESP and GTP-U headers.
The implementation is highly modular and easily extendable to support many more protocol header types.
